Spillway & Calica - Honest Song
When I opened up my Groover submissions earlier this week, (who else is in disbelief that beginning this week it was October and it is already three days into November now somehow?) I found Spillway’s song that has a feature whose name sounded familiar to me. Like in a legend-status familiarity. Of course, I’m talking about Calica who I interviewed almost three years ago; give it a read (we talked about her song 127 Hours).
Honest Song is a song that fits our mood lately. Like soaking up the last glimpses of sunshine and kinda makes us nostalgic already looking back at what the year 2024 brought us. For Spillway, it definitely was one for the books. As a duo releasing their debut single Are You Having Fun Yet? in early July, followed up by Indiana, and now their duet with Calica (for who they’re currently also producing an album for).
Wearing a shirt
That says I hate Matty Healy
With music like Harry
And an affect like Phoebe
The lyrics being honest in a song called Honest Song was the first thing that caught my attention. Lines of casually dropping in names we’ve been seeing a lot in the past five years and everyone claims them to be indie, but then them announcing their stadium tour … The first line being Indie is dead while Spillway is a perfect representation how indie is very much still with us and another line saying Every new record's got a pedal steel player while you can hear the pedal steel resounding in the background of the track.
Listeners of the band have commented underneath their latest post things like “My birthday is in a few days. Somehow this song summed up something about the last decade that I just couldn’t articulate. Thank you” and upcoming artist Josephine Illingworth says she just found them and the song’s magic; we couldn’t agree more. Excited to see what else they’re bringing for us.
