** this blog post came out on January 7, 2022 via the old website**
I have known Ben, founder of Pulse, for almost a year now. Our friendship is special and unique. I am very grateful he reached out to work with me one day in April 2021 although we never really finished a project together, our friendship got created through this reach-out. I’ve known his ideas and visions for Pulse, watched them growing and growing from time to time and was at all times so excited about what will come up for him, what will come true, wished for him to find great musicians to work with on this band, so he could fulfill his dream of Pulse. I feel very honored to get sent his demos now and then and that he shares his visions of pulse with me. Exciting and thrilled, I am now finally able to support Ben on his journey by giving him a spot in Bonnie’s Legends’ blog series Oh, Pretty Music! with this interview.
Bluebells is the name of the new single of Pulse and it’s out now on all streaming platforms!
In real Ben fashion, he sent me the answers to my questions in an already finished and formatted text, so I am passing over Ben writing about his new single Bluebells:
Hey! My name is Ben Bramhall, the founder and one half of Pulse. The other half is Toby Barker who I met through pure luck by going to a university open day. We started jamming which led to us becoming friends and things went from there.
Our new song and second single is called ‘Bluebells’. It will be released today on the 17th December 2021. The song was written during a bad time of my life. Things just felt hopeless and sad. I was walking home from school and took a detour through a forest in my town and saw bluebells growing in the summer. My first thought was ‘bluebells laying in a meadow’ and I thought THAT’S IT. That afternoon I wrote the entire song and edited it a couple of months later. The Smiths inspired the track with their depressing yet cheerful music and it fuelled me to write this song.
I came up with most of the parts as I hadn’t even met Toby at the time. However, the drumming was recorded by Toby and he did a fantastic job. The middle 8 was a last minute decision but I felt it needed more to the song instead of the same thing over and over.
My favourite lyric would be ‘nature is culture, are you blind or does the shine out of your behind?’ as it’s funny to me because people are so serious in life I thought I would add some comedy.
The perfect place to listen to bluebells would be…walking in a forest then sitting against a tree.
Enjoy
