I took a walk through my village this evening, listened to the entire playlist and mind-wrote how I could describe last week’s music. Last July, I graduated high school and one of my majors had been music, but more in a classical Beethoven way. Tonight, I remembered how I always tried to convince my music teacher that also today’s “modern pop” is musically important for our culture and should be discussed in schools too. I didn’t succeed, but last week’s music and the compilation playlist above would be one I’d show to whoever doesn’t believe my statement.
If you take a listen, you can hear the unique orchestral and soundscapes of today’s music. Let’s dive into it:
Lovegod by Sarah Kinsley
An anthem for unrequited love? Yes, please! And Sarah Kinsley delivered. Lovegod is another masterpiece of the artist and mixes heavenly the orchestral soundscapes of heartbeats and the blood-throbbing synths we all love from her once again into a song that is stitched together with beautifully-written lyrics on love & unrequited feelings.
Now I want to just open my heart / But I am without someone in that regard / So I go where they say lovers go
My Reverie by Angel Olsen
If there is someone in the world, then Angel Olsen singing about dreams. And we all know she’s a master in covering our favorites and making them sound like she’d written it in the first place. On my walk, the world seemed to be non-existent for 3.09 minutes. I was trapped by Olsen’s voice in a world outside of my own. And when the big band overtakes the song, I seemed to fly high above the ground that touched my feet. Catch me dancing tip-tap-tip-tap later to this song in my room!
Our love is a dream / But in my reverie / I can see that this love was meant for me
Boy Crazy by The Saxophones
Angel’s song and The Saxophones’ new single go hand-in-hand if you listen to them together. From one big band to another. From one to another dream song. This song capsulated me right into a time machine and took me to California in the late 1960s. There is something mysterious and addicting to the soundscape, like I am a private investigator hiding behind curtains and peeking out to two secret lovers dancing in the moonlight.
How could you be done? / When I’ve barely begun. / Well, it’s wonderful to settle down / And reserve my strength for the end.
90’s RnB Love (Hipposonic Sessions) - Live by Emma Alves & The Project Vancity
Emma Alves, aka the girl with the weird elf ears, has already been my legend on the podcast! I love witnessing the artists growing and getting more attention from release to release that they deserve so much, and so I get always very excited to listen to Emma’s new music. 90’s RnB Love got released two months ago, now she put together a cozy session in Vancouver with band and recorded a very special version of the song which can be enjoyed now. This showcases Emma’s angel voice which I always try to describe to my friends. Oh, what I’d do to hear her live one day!
appreciate communication / to accurately convey my love
From The Start by Laufey
Now, I think this song would’ve been the one I could’ve satisfied my music teacher the most. Laufey’s a remarkable artist in today’s music industry with her big band, orchestral Jazz and witty lyrics on young love. Listening to this song on my silly little mental health walk tonight I felt like Kate Winslet in a Nancy Meyers’ film. Romantic The Holiday vibes over here.
What’s a girl to do? / Lying on my bed staring / Into the blue / Unrequited terrifying / Love is driving me a bit insane
This is all for this week! Last week’s new music releases were definitely for all hopeless romantics out there. Let’s hope our hearts won’t get broken more this coming week in front of us.❤️🩹
